Overview of the Canadian Gaming Market

Debit Card CasinoGambling is one of the biggest industries in the world, but it’s also one of the most unique. This is an industry that enjoys just as much success during times of prosperity as it does during financial downturns. It is an industry that offers the consumer the chance to win big money, but always profits nonetheless. In Canada, the gambling industry is in even more of a unique position, because it exists to the north of a country that tightly regulates the industry, yet it is heavily influenced by the regulations of countries like the United Kingdom, which have some of the most relaxed laws in the world.

Outside of Canada, there are many people who assume that gambling is as restricted here as it is in the US. But that’s not true. Far from it in fact. Because while the laws aren’t as relaxed as they are in the UK, gambling—and online gambling—is legal and widely available. There have been suggestions that this might change, and those rumors have formed an ominous cold that has hung over the industry. But they have existed for many years and nothing has changed yet, nor will it likely change in the future.

That’s because gambling is a huge business in Canada. It is true that online gambling tends to draw money out of a country and into tax havens. But Canada is a little different. There are authorities that regulate and control the industry in certain regions, making sure all of the money goes through them. And when you consider that the biggest online gambling company in the world (Amaya) is Canadian, this industry will always benefit the country’s coffers in one way or another.

If you’re still a little confused about the status of online gambling, then you won’t be for long. On we make it our goal to clarify these complicated online gambling laws. Far too many Canadians don’t understand the gambling laws in their own country, and we don’t think that’s right. We also clearly show you which Canadian banks allow online gambling. We also have a handy directory of great resources for Canadian gamblers.

Gamers are fed conflicting information from their peers and even from government officials. They are fed confusing information from casinos and affiliate sites only interested in their bank balance. And when they try to read up on the gambling laws, the only information they can find relates to the US and not to Canada.

This is a Canadian site for Canadian gamblers. The laws we discuss all relate to this country and the casinos and sports books mentioned all accept players from here. It is our hope that this will make life easier for Canadian gamblers.

In Short:It’s not often we hear back from our readers. In fact, it’s very rare, but not surprisingly so. After all, ours is just another website on the proverbial information highway. Most of us gather the info we need and simply move on. However,  we have gotten some interesting correspondence over the years. I’ll share a few of our favorite stories below.
In Detail:
Angela Wins a ‘Major’ Prize

In 2017, we received an email from an Angela M. of Tsawwassen Springs, B.C. She explained that for many years she had been a regular at one of Canada’s largest casinos, The River Rock in Richmond, but that she was “frightened” by recent events. Every time she saw a “fancy suit” she was afraid it might be a criminal. (Some of you may remember River Rock Casino’s big high-roller money laundering scandal that erupted that year.)

“I’m too frightened to go to River Rock anymore. Every time I see a person in a fancy suit, I wonder if they’re a criminal!”

Angela went on to tell us that she decided for the first time to take her casino gaming online. She found our website, where we had just published an article detailing Microgaming’s Best Online Racing Slots. Intrigued by the millionaire’s jackpot on 5 Reel Drive Mega Moolah, she clicked the link, registering an account with Royal Vegas to seek out the game.

Her very first spin led to the bonus wheel feature, where she won the Mini jackpot for about $27. It was exciting, sure, but not a life changer. Then, about a dozen spins later, she struck the Major jackpot for $12,473!

“This is incredible! I’m so glad I came across your website. I can’t thank you enough. Next stop, the ‘Mega’ jackpot!”

We are so very happy for you Angela and hope your dreams of striking a multi-million jackpot come true!

Katrina Finally Beats the Dealer

In 2021, we received a message from Katrina P. of Hearst, Ontario. She wrote to tell us that, after finding our blackjack guide, she finally discovered why her blackjack strategy wasn’t working out. She quoted the exact text on our website that resulted in this epiphany:

“…the slightest variation in rules can change the dynamics of a basic strategy chart. Players must choose the game to be played before choosing the chart to incorporate for that game.” -DBC Ultimate Blackjack Guide

Katrina said she had always used the same basic strategy for every game of blackjack. When she started using our game-specific strategy charts, she saw an immediate difference.

“I don’t know why it never occurred to me before, but thank you so much for pointing this out! It’s only been three weeks and I’m up $700. Amazing!”

Thanh Turns to Poker

This last story comes out of Montreal, Quebec. In January of 2023, Thanh L. wrote to tell us what he’d been doing for the last year.

He said that in December 2021, after a bad run with video poker, he turned to search engines looking for “beatable casino games”. That’s when he ran across this page on our website. Thanh was surprised to find that the only three beatable games weren’t traditional casino games at all, but rather poker, horse racing, and sports betting.

Not a sports fan, Thanh began learning everything he could about poker. He read more of our pages on the topic, bought a few books, watched Youtube videos and live poker tournaments whenever he could. Thanh spent a few weeks at the free-play tables practicing, then in January 2022, made his first deposit at Party Poker.

“It’s been exactly one year since I made the deposit. Thanks to your advice, I’m happy to say I just put a down payment on a new home for my family. It turns out I’m pretty good at mid-range tournaments! I don’t know where I’d be if I hadn’t come across your page. Thank you!”

What Canadian Law Books Say about Manitoba Online Gambling in 2023 A number of Canadian provinces authorize their own government-run iGaming portals.
