Mizzi Scoops $225k in CPP Super High Roller
Sorel Mizzi landed in 5th at the CPP $50k Super High Roller, adding $225,000 to his career earnings. Fellow Canadian poker pro Senthuran Vijayaratnam is going strong into CPP Main Day 3.
The PartyPoker LIVE 2018 Caribbean Poker Party is well underway this week in The Bahamas, where the CPP Super High Roller wrapped up last night and the Main Event is heading into Day 3. Some of Canada’s best poker players made the trip, and for a few, it’s really paying off.
Yesterday, one of the top Canadian poker players in history, Sorel Mizzi, slapped nearly a quarter million on top of his impressive live career earnings. A few hours later, one of our up-and-coming pros, Senthuran Vijayaratnam, bagged enough chips to put him in third place going into day 3 of the CPP Main Event.
Sorel Mizzi Takes 5th in Super High Roller
Mizzi fought a valiant battle in yesterday’s CPP $50k Super High Roller. A total of 54 players bought into the one-day nosebleed tourney, building a prize pool worth $2,619,000. As the action wore on, the field diminished quickly enough, bringing up the final table of nine. Being a super high roller event, though, only the top 7 would earn a cash in this one.
Justin Bonomo was first to exit the final. Another rising star from Canada, Christopher Kruk, started the final table high in the counts, but suffered a devastating run that bubbled him out in 8th. American Sean Winter was the beneficiary of that elimination, setting off a spree that saw him take out Benjamin Pollak, Markus Prinz and Sorel Mizzi in quick succession.
Soon enough, only Winter and the Venezuelan, Giuseppe Iadisernia, remained. It was a surprisingly long battle between them, but Iadisernia prevailed, claiming $845,000 in his first recorded live tournament routing. Winter settled for $550k as runner up.
Mizzi’s finish was an admirable one. He’s no newcomer to the final table scene, having landed in well over 50 of them over the course of his illustrious career; 14 worth 1st place prizes. This time, his 5th place finish in the CPP Super High Roller earned him $225,000, bringing his total live career earnings to US-$12,493,190, and further securing his position as the 5th highest all-time winning Canadian poker player.
Vijayaratnam Aims High in 2018 CPP Main Event
The name Senthuran Vijayaratnam may not be famous yet, but if you spend half as much time as he does at the Playground Poker Club in Kahnawake, you just might recognize him. Vijayaratnam has 18 live career cashes under his belt, with 15 of those paid out by the cashiers at Playground Poker.
His largest cash to date, CA-$48,000, came in the poker room’s 2017 World Cup of Cards, when he finished runner up to fellow Canadian Jiachen Gong. Two weeks ago, he was back in Kahnawake for the 2018 WPT Montreal, where he finished 58th for CA-$15,500. To date, he’s got $185,162 (CA-$245,340) in total winnings. If his current progress in the 2018 Caribbean Poker Party Main Event stays on track, that number could rise significantly a few days from now.
As the action of Day 2a came to a close last night, Vijayaratnam found himself in the top three counts. The high stack belongs to PartyPoker Pro Dzmitry Urbanovich of Poland, with 19.55 million in the bag. Right behind him is Emmanouil Fountoulakis of Greece, bringing 19.1mm back to the tables. Senthuran Vijayaratnam bagged the third highest stack of 16.38mm. The only other Canadian to make the top 25 list is Michael Benko, running 18th with 11.2mm.
The PartyPoker LIVE 2018 CPP Main resumes at the Baha Mar Resort just a few hours for now, where the remaining 170 entrants will battle it out on day 3.
