Euchre Gone Wild: Crazy Rule Variations

Comprehensive list of the craziest Euchre rules & twists.

Crazy Euchre Rules

The more I attempt to teach others how to play Canada’s favorite card games, the more I learn along the way. I’ve spoken to a lot of people in the last year or so about Euchre, and I’m finding there are many more ways to play the game than I’d ever imagined possible.

You have your standard Euchre rules (Canadian version, of course) and a few basic Euchre variants, but there’s so many more ways to mix up the game. You might do it for fun. You might do it to make players slip up, forcing them to take a shot of your favorite liquor. Or, you might do it out of sheer boredom with the original game!

Whatever your reason, I’m sure anyone can find at least one crazy Euchre rule they’d like to throw into the next friend / family game night.

Crazy, Wacky and Silly Euchre Variations

For my own sanity, I’ve decided to list these in alphabetical order. Every time I prepare a list, it gets longer, so consider this forever a work in progress!

Quick Reference:

  • STD = Stick-the-Dealer (a.k.a. Screw the Dealer); if everyone passes in both rounds, the dealer is forced to call trump.
  • 2pt Penalty: Unless otherwise stated, any player/team error receives a 2 point penalty.
  • Partner or Loner: Unless otherwise stated, or determined by standard rules, maker may play with their partner or go alone.
  • Skip Ahead to Crazy British Rules Variants

Aces Dominate

This game plays out like any other standard game of Euchre. However, if an Ace is turned up, the suit of that Ace will automatically become the only eligible trump to be ordered up or called. This trump suit will remain in effect for all subsequent hands of play, unless another Ace is turned up. Then that Ace’s suit becomes the static trump, and so on. Once the match is over, the next game starts as usual with standard rules again until such time if/when an Ace is turned up.

Aces Rule

Any non-trump Ace that is played at any time (led or followed) cannot be trumped unless trumps are the only suit left in the player’s hand. If the Ace of trump is played, it cannot be over-trumped unless the higher trump was played first, or the player has only higher trumps in their hand.

Ace in Your Face

Whenever an Ace is turned up, the Dealer must order this up as Trump.

Aggravation

Only the upcard can be ordered as trump. If no one orders the first round, a second round occurs. If no one orders the second round, a new game is dealt by the next dealer in line.

Aggravation Paradigm

The exact opposite of Aggravation, the upcard can not be ordered! Players must pass on the first round, and may then call trump in round two. STD applies.

Aggravation STD

Only the upcard can be ordered as trump. If no one orders the first round, the dealer is forced to order it up.

All the Lonely People

This is a Loner’s Only style game wherein whoever orders or calls trump must go alone. The benefit is that the one to make trump also gets to choose a sole opponent to play against. Both the maker and chosen defender go alone, heads-up style.

Alone at 5

All standard Euchre rules are employed until a team reaches 5 points. Any team with 5+ points must go alone to order or call trump. Until then, Loners are optional. STD applies.

Angry Pards

One of the hardest Euchre variants I’ve ever played, this game requires the dealer to order/call trump every hand. If that wasn’t difficult enough, the dealer’s “pard” (partner) will always tell the dealer what suit to make trump. And the cherry on top – the dealer must go alone!

Bag The Dealer I

The dealer is not allowed to order or call trump. If the dealer’s partner orders or calls trump, he/she must go alone! The dealer can only participate in a hand when the other team calls/orders trump.

Bag the Dealer II

In this version of Bag the Dealer, similar rules apply, plus STR (Stick the Righty). The dealer may not order trump, and if the dealer’s partner orders, he/she must go alone. The dealer only plays as a defender. If no one orders trump in the first round, the player right of dealer is forced to call trump.

Baggers Busted

If the next player to bid has 3 of a single suit in their hand, that player must call trump, calling the dominant suit in their hand. This rule supersedes ordering in the first round and calling in the second. If the dealer has two cards of the same suit as the upcard, the dealer must order it up.

These rules apply in order of next-to-bid. For example, if the dealer has 2 clubs and a club turns up, but the player to his right has 3 hearts, that player must call hearts before the dealer has a chance to order the clubs.

If no hand corresponds to these stipulations, all standard rules of ordering and calling apply.

Beauty and the Beast

This is a typical game of Euchre from start to finish unless the King or Queen of Hearts is turned up at any point in the game. If the King of Hearts turns up, the game is immediately over. The current Dealer’s Team wins, regardless of score. If the Queen of Hearts turns up, the game is immediately over, an the team with the highest score at that moment wins. In case of a tie, that hand is played out to determine the winner.

Big Junk

Normal Euchre rules remain in play for all hands unless a Jack is turned up. If the upcard is a Jack, the Dealer must order it up, and is not allowed to go it alone. Otherwise, loners are allowed and standard STD rules apply.

Blackjack Euchre

The most unique variant I’ve come across to date, this game has a most interesting twist. If a player happens to be naturally dealt the Ace and Jack of Spades, or the Ace and Jack of Clubs (matching suits a must), that player can immediately declare “Blackjack!” Spades outrank clubs in case of a tie. So if two players have Blackjack – one player has Ace+Jack of Spades, and the other Ace+Jack of Clubs – the player with Blackjack in spades wins. This team automatically wins the point for the hand. Cards are turned in and the next hand is dealt. If no player calls Blackjack, the game proceeds by standard rules with STD.

Black Light Euchre

This is the opposite of Red Light Euchre and similar to Black Rosie, but more restrictive. Only black suits can become trump. Only the dealer’s team can order or call clubs. The dealer’s opponents can only order or call spades. If a club is turned up, the dealer’s partner can order it or pass. If the partner passes, the dealer is forced to order it up. The same goes for turned up spades – if the player left of dealer doesn’t order it, his partner must. If a red suit is turned up, no one may order it. A second round of bidding starts with players able to call their respective trump suit. If all others pass, STD applies.

Black Loners Only

Only black suits (spades and clubs) can be ordered or called. If ordering a black trump, loners are optional. If calling a black trump, the maker must go alone. STD applies.

Black Rosie

The dealer is only allowed to order black suits (clubs and spades). All non-dealers, including the dealer’s partner, may only order red suits (hearts and diamonds).

Bloody Mary

Standard Euchre rules are in play for the majority, if not all, of this game. The only time the rules change is if a Red Queen – the Queen of Hearts or Queen of Diamonds (aka Bloody Mary) – is turned up. If/when this happens, the Dealer is forced to order it up without the assistance of a partner (must go alone). In all other hands, loners are optional and STD applies.

Bloody Suicide

The opposite of Dark Suicide, this game requires the player left of the dealer to order up any red suit that is turned up. If a black suit turns up, everyone must pass and the player left of dealer must call a red suit as trump. No one else may order or call trump.

Bow to the Bower

The player who holds the Jack of the turned up card’s suit must take it up. If a jack is turned up, the dealer must order it. If no one holds the Jack of the turned up suit, all must pass, turning it down. The first bidding player in round two who has a Jack of any suit in hand must call trump in the suit of the Jack they hold.

Bossman Jack / Jack’s the Boss

You don’t know Jack! Unless you’re the dealer. If a Jack is turned up, the dealer will get to know him intimately as he has no choice but to order it up as trump, and go it alone. If any other card is turned up, normal rules apply.

Canadian Loner

Normal rules apply in all respects except one. If the dealer’s partner orders up trump, he/she is forced to go alone.

Chain Smoking

All players must automatically pass the upcard. Trump may only be called in a black suit (club or spade). And the real kicker – the dealer tells the player to the left what trump to call.

Cheater Cheater

This game permits one hint per hand, per player, to their partner. The hint may only pertain to what suit you want your partner to call. For example, if you want them to call hearts, you could say ‘I love rainy days’, or ‘This game really gets my blood pumping!’ For spades, you could try, ‘Can you dig it?’, or ‘Were you a grave digger in a past life?’ You get the idea. Whatever you do, you cannot say the exact name of the suit – hints only! And you can only hint at the suit you want called before someone makes trump. You can’t hint for your partner to play a certain card, number or suit after the hand begins. Break any of these rules, and you lose a point!

Note that hints are optional. You do not have to give your partner a hint, as doing so might also help your opponents. Then again, without a hint, your opponent may pass on what might have been a great call. Consider your options carefully so that you’re only using hints to your strategic advantage.

Checkers

The dealer’s team can only order or call black. The non-dealer team can only order or call red. Because the deal rotates, the color each player can order/call rotates with it. Otherwise all standard rules apply.

Clubs for Lefty

If a club is turned up, the player left of the dealer (aka Lefty) must order it as trump. Otherwise, all standard rules, including STD, apply.

Clubs or Die / Absolute Clubs

Clubs are the only suit that can be made trump for the entire match. No other suits are eligible. If a club is turned up, the dealer must take it up. If any other suit turns up, the player left of the dealer must call clubs trump. Loners are optional.

Club the Dealer

This rule forces the dealer into a precarious position! The dealer must order up clubs, and must go it alone. If the upcard is not a club, the dealer passes and calls clubs instead.

Commander

The dealer is the Commander. Before each new hand is dealt, the Commander will choose what color is eligible to become trump in the next hand. Players may only order or call that color for the hand. If the chosen color is turned up, the card can be ordered as trump. If the other color turns up, everyone must pass. Then players can call the commanded color. If none do so, STD applies.

Note that the color can be chosen anytime after the last card is played in the previous hand, to anytime before a card is turned up in the new hand (and as such, before seeing their own hand, of course). If the Commander fails to call a color before turning up a card, it is an error. The dealer’s team loses 2 points, and the deal shifts to the next Commander.

Crazy Makers Trump Eliminator

This crazy Euchre game rule could put a big wrench in your trump-making plans! By these rules, each player is only permitted to order or call each suit as trump one time. If you’ve already ordered up hearts, you can’t make hearts trump again for the rest of the match. Other players can – your own partner can – but no person can order/call the same trump twice.

Everyone is responsible for remember what they’ve called, so you might want to keep pen and paper handy, or use the extra low cards to designate who called what some lower cards from the deck set aside for each player to remember what they’ve already made as the game progresses. Anyone who attempts to call the same trump twice should be given a 2 point penalty. STD applies.

Crazy Suits

At the start of every game, each player is assigned one suit. The suit that appears on the upcard determines who must order it up. If it’s your suit, it’s your card! Ordering is forced.

By standard rules, the suit of each player is determined thusly:

  • Dealer is Diamonds
  • Lefty is Hearts
  • Dealer’s Partner is Spades
  • Righty is Clubs

Note that the suits do not change with the deal. Whoever starts the first game as dealer is diamonds for the entire match.

An alternative option that I’ve found to be more interesting is to take one card of each suit from the deck and mix them up. Each player draws one card, and the suit upon it is their suit for the rest of the game.

Crown the Dealer

Heavy is the head that wears the crown! In this game, all the usual Euchre rules apply unless a King happens to be turned up. When a King turns up, someone has to order it as trump. If the first three players pass, STD applies, and the dealer is forced to go alone.

Cyanide Suicide

This game is similar to Suicide Euchre rules, but with an even worst twist. The dealer is forced to order up the upcard, no matter what it is, and must go it alone!

Dark Suicide

The opposite of Bloody Suicide, this game requires the player left of the dealer to order up any black suit that is turned up. If a red suit turns up, everyone must pass and the player left of dealer must call a black suit as trump. No one else may order or call trump.

Deadly Diamonds

This is a deadly game for the player seated left of the dealer. This player is forced to lead the game, and must order up diamonds. If the upcard is not a diamond, everyone passes and Lefty calls diamonds in round two.

Dealer’s Choice / Dealers Only

Only the dealer can order or call trump. If the dealer does not order the upcard, he/she must call a different suit trump. Loners are optional.

Dealer’s Revenge

This first hand is played by standard rules. At the end of the hand, the dealer will call out a specific suit to be named trump in the next hand. The dealer of that next hand is required to make trump in the suit that was called. If that suit turns up, it can be ordered by the dealer, otherwise a pass-and-call is mandatory. This continues for the remainder of the game, with the current dealer always calling trump for the next dealer.

Dealer’s Revenge Nightmare

The exact same rules apply to this version as standard Dealer’s Revenge, except that this time (after the first hand of play), the dealer is forced to make trump and go alone.

Dealer’s Suicide

Standard Euchre rules apply except that for every hand, the dealer is forced to order the upcard and go alone. No exceptions!

Diamonds & Clubs / Best Friends

All standard Euchre rules apply except that diamonds and clubs are the only two suits that me be ordered or called. Spades and hearts cannot be trump. STD applies.

Diamonds & Spades / Digging for Riches

All standard Euchre rules apply except that diamonds and spades are the only two suits that me be ordered or called. Clubs and hearts cannot be trump. STD applies.

Diamonds for Lefty

If a diamond is turned up, the player left of the dealer (aka Lefty) must order it as trump. Otherwise, all standard rules, including STD, apply.

Diamonds or Die / Absolute Diamonds

Diamonds are the only suit that can be made trump for the entire match. No other suits are eligible. If a diamond is turned up, the dealer must take it up. If any other suit turns up, the player left of the dealer must call diamonds trump. Loners are optional.

Dilemma

You may need to print a rule sheet for this game, as the format will change with each new hand played. The card turned up in each hand will decide the trump-calling rules of the following hand as follows:

Upcard Rules / Required Trump to Call in Next Hand
9 Red Only (Diamonds or Hearts as Trump)
10 Strip 9’s (Any led 9 cannot be trumped unless only trumps are left in your hand).
Jack Black Only (Clubs or Spades as Trump)
Queen Standard Euchre Rules
King Suicide (Dealer forced to order it up)
Ace Only the Lonely / Loners Only (Maker must go alone)

Dirty Courage

This game is only dirty for the dealer, who has no choice but to order up any 9 or 10 that gets turned up. No one else has a right to it, and the dealer cannot pass or decline. If any other card value appears as the upcard, normal game rules apply.

Dirty Clubs

This game is only dirty for the dealer, who has no choice but to order up any club that gets turned up. No one else has a right to it, and the dealer cannot pass or decline. If any other suit appears as the upcard, normal game rules apply.

Dirty Diamonds

This game is only dirty for the dealer, who has no choice but to order up any diamond that gets turned up. No one else has a right to it, and the dealer cannot pass or decline. If any other suit appears as the upcard, normal game rules apply.

Dirty Hearts

This game is only dirty for the dealer, who has no choice but to order up any heart that gets turned up. No one else has a right to it, and the dealer cannot pass or decline. If any other suit appears as the upcard, normal game rules apply.

Dirty Spades

This game is only dirty for the dealer, who has no choice but to order up any spade that gets turned up. No one else has a right to it, and the dealer cannot pass or decline. If any other suit appears as the upcard, normal game rules apply.

Dirty Switch

Unless a Jack is turned up, spades will always be ordered/called trump. Dealer must order up any upcard that is a spade (except a Jack). If any suit besides spades is turned up, all will pass, and player left of dealer must call spades. If any Jack is turned up, the dealer must order it.

Once a Jack is turned up, the suit of that Jack will become and remain the required trump suit for all subsequent hands until another Jack is turned up. The rules above are followed, with the new suit replacing the requirement of spades (unless it is a Jack of spades, then the rules remain the same).

Dominatrix / Queen’s Rule

This is a standard Euchre game unless a Queen is turned up. If the upcard is Queen of Clubs, Diamonds or Spades, the dealer must order it up – no exceptions. If the Queen of Hearts is turned up, the game I immediately over. The team with the highest current score wins. In case of a tie, the dealer takes up the Queen and the hand is played out to determine the winners.

Don’t Know Jack

This slight variation follows standard Euchre rules throughout game play, unless a Jack is turned up. If so, the dealer must immediately order it up, and go alone. STD is otherwise optional.

Double Screw

This game is similar to Dealer’s Suicide, except that he’s not the only player getting screwed. For every hand, the dealer is forced to order the upcard as trump, and go alone. The player left of the dealer is forced to defend alone. The other two players must sit out.

Down & Alone

If the upcard is ordered as trump, traditional rules remain intact (loners optional). If all pass on the upcard, whoever calls trump has no choice but to go alone. STD applies.

Drunken Dealer

The dealer must order the upcard as trump, or pass, call trump and going alone.

Drunken Idiot

If no one orders the upcard, the dealer’s partner must call trump on the second round.

Drunken Master

Only the dealer’s partner has the opportunity to order up trump. If the dealer’s partner passes, others may call. However, if everyone else passes, the dealer’s partner must call on the second round.

Drunken Sailor

The dealer’s partner has no choice but to order the upcard as trump, and go alone. Defending alone is optional.

Duck Duck Goose

In the first hand of the match, the dealer must order up the upcard. For all subsequent hands, the winner of the last trick in the previous hand must order it up in the next hand.

Elimination

The game starts like any other with all players and suits eligible for making trump. However, if a player is Euchred, the suit that was trump during that hand is eliminated. That suit may no longer be ordered or called as trump for the rest of the hand. If all four suits get eliminated before the game is over, the game continues with all suits becoming eligible again. The elimination of suits starts over.

Elvis

We all know Elvis is The King! In this game, the King is the only card that can cause a deviation from standard Euchre rules. Any time a King appears as the upcard, the dealer must automatically order it up. No one else can order it, and the dealer can’t pass on it.

E.S.P.

The dealer must take the upcard and make it trump. To make things more interesting, the dealer can choose which opponent they want to defend along against them. The chosen player must defend alone. The dealer, however, can go alone or accept the assistance of their partner.

Euchre On The Sly

The object of any standard Euchre game is to win, of course. In this version, however, it’s No Holds Barred! Players are encouraged to do whatever it takes to win. Bluff, cheat, talk over the table or slip cards under it to your partner – anything goes! STD applies.

Euchre with a Twist

This crazy Euchre game requires the dealer to make trump every hand. However, the dealer has no say in what that trump will be. While the hand is being dealt, but before any cards (including the upcard) are seen, the player to his/her Left will tell the dealer what suit to make trump. If that suit is turned up, the dealer may take it up. If not, the dealer must pass the upcard and call the trump suit designated by Lefty. Loners are not allowed.

Face Card Frenzy / Face Card Fun

This can be a rough game for the dealer, who will be required to order up trump in about half of all hands. If the upcard is a Jack, Queen or King (i.e. any face card) the dealer is obligated to order it as trump. Other players have no rights to it, and the dealer is not allowed to pass. If any other card (9, 10 or Ace) turns up, all standard rules apply.

Fast & Furious Euchre

This rapid-fire version requires groups to play on a 10 minute timer. Whichever team has the highest score at the end of 10 minutes wins. There are two ways to finish a game like this.

  1. If the timer runs out while a hand is in progress, finish and score that hand. If the result is a tie, play one more hand to determine the winner.
  2. When time runs out, end the game immediately. If there’s a hand in progress, play is stopped and no score is taken. If, however, the current score is a tie, then you may finish the game in progress to determine the winner. If the game ends in a tie while no hand is in progress, play one more hand to decide the winner.

All players must agree to keep a fast pace. If one team is winning, and either of its members are deliberately playing slow to exhaust time, 2 penalty points should be applied. Then again, if players aren’t mature enough to abide by the fast and furious rules of play, try Speed Euchre instead.

Fudge Your Neighbor

If ordering up is passed to the dealer, the dealer must also pass. The player left of the dealer must then call up trump. However, the dealer will tell the player to his/her left what trump suit to call. That player must comply.

Full House

Any player has a Full House – a three of a kind + a pair – is instantly declared the winner of the hand. It doesn’t matter if the hand was naturally dealt, or if the upcard was taken and another card discarded to achieve the full house. So long as the player’s 5-card hand is a full house, it counts, and is worth 1 point. A new hand is dealt after scoring.

Fun With Face Cards

If the upcard is any face card (jack, queen or king), the dealer must order it up as trump. Otherwise, all standard rules apply.

Geronimo!

For the most part, this is played by normal Canadian Euchre rules. There’s only one little difference. If the Jack of Diamonds happens to turn up, the dealer is scalped! His or her team loses instantly. The hand is not played out. The opponents win the point, and the deal rotates to the left for the next hand.

Girl’s Night Out

For obvious reasons, this game works best when there are two male+female partnerships at the table. The concept is simple. Only the girls (never the guys!) are allowed to order up or call trump. The guys are just there for support if needed, since loners are allowed. STD applies, but if the dealer is male, his partner must make trump instead.

Goose Goose Duck

Similar to Duck Duck Goose Euchre, except that the upcard does not have to be taken. On the first hand, the Dealer must order or call trump. On all subsequent hands, the player who captured the final trick must order or call trump in the next hand.

Halfway to Heaven

For this game, both teams are required to order/call Black suits only until they reach 5 points – halfway to a winning score. From there, the team may only order/call Red suits.

Alternatively, Red suits can be called for the first 5 points, and Black suits for the remainder.

Another possible alternative is to have one team only calling Red, and the other only Black, when the game starts. Players will alternate colors once their team reaches 5 points.

Hangover

The first hand is regular Euchre, and basic rules are used throughout, expect when it comes to ordering/calling suits. At the end of the first hand, the player who catches the last trick must say out loud the suit that captured the trick. The suit that is called out is the suit that must be called in the next hand. If the upcard happens to be that suit, it can be ordered. Otherwise, the first round of bidding is skipped and players revert to calling trump or passing.

If the card that captures the final trick is the Left Bower, the suit is considered to be the suit of the trump for that hand. For example, if trump is Clubs, and the Jack of Spades captures the last trick, Clubs is called as the next trump.

Hearts & Spades / Heart & Soul

All standard Euchre rules apply except that hearts and spades are the only two suits that me be ordered or called. Clubs and diamonds cannot be trump. STD applies.

Hearts for Lefty

If a heart is turned up, the player left of the dealer (aka Lefty) must order it as trump. Otherwise, all standard rules, including STD, apply.

Hearts or Die / Absolute Hearts

Hearts are the only suit that can be made trump for the entire match. No other suits are eligible. If a heart is turned up, the dealer must take it up. If any other suit turns up, the player left of the dealer must call hearts trump. Loners are optional.

Hint Hint

Similar to Cheater Cheater, but not nearly so revealing, and much more limited in who can do what. In Hint Hint, only the dealer can make trump. Once the upcard is turned, the dealer’s partner can give a hint. The only words he/she can say is “Yes” or “No”. This gives the dealer a clue as to whether the partner odes or does not want them to take up the card as trump. However, the dealer can do whatever he/she likes – take the upcard as trump, or pass on it and call a different trump suit. One way or another, the dealer must make trump.

Homicidal Colors

This is a tough one! Before the first hand is dealt, the Host (or Dealer) will pick a color. For this first hand, this color must be ordered (if applicable) or called as trump. Once this hand begins, the player who wins the first trick must immediately (right after winning the first trick) call the color of the trump-to-be in the next hand!

Homicidal Loners

This one is similar to Homicidal Colors, but worse, because whoever makes trump must go alone. Before the first hand is dealt, the Host (or Dealer) will pick a color, red or black. For this first hand, this color must be ordered (if applicable) or called as trump. Once this hand begins, the player to capture the first trick must immediately call the color red or black, designating the color of trump in the following hand. Remember, whoever makes trump must always go alone!

Hot Potato

No one wants to be caught with the Hot Potato, and it’s no different in this steamy game of Euchre! The first hand starts out normal, but at the very end, just as the player collecting the last trick scoops it from the table, he/she must call out one suit. After the next hand is dealt, the player who called out the suit is forced to make trump, and may only call one of the three remaining suits – not the suit that was called. Whoever wins the final trick in this hand does the same, and so on until the match is over.

Insanity

With each game, the upcard determines the rules of making trump.

  • If an Ace turns up, Dealer must order it.
  • If a King turns up, Left of Dealer must order it.
  • If a Queen turns up, Dealer’s Partner must order it.
  • If a Jack turns up, Right of Dealer must order it.
  • If 9 or 10 turns up, traditional Euchre rules with STD apply.

Intimidation / Intimidator

At the beginning of each hand, everyone looks at their cards. Anyone who believes they have a strong enough hand to go alone can shout “Loner!” The first to shout Loner wins the bid automatically. If two or more shout Loner at the same time, the winner of the bid is determined by position, starting with dealer first, then left of dealer, dealer’s partner, and right of dealer.

The player who wins the Loner bid can order up trump or call their own, and they must go alone. If this player fails to catch all 5 tricks, however, they are not allowed to call “Loner” for the rest of the match.

If no player shouts Loner to start, the game proceeds as normal, with STD applicable. The only difference is that Loners are not allowed unless calling Loner from the start.

Jacks Dominate

This game starts out like any other standard game of Euchre. If a Jack is turned up, however, the suit of that Jack will instantly become the only eligible trump, and will remain trump for all subsequent hands unless another Jack is turned up. Then that Jack’s suit becomes the static trump, and so on. The static trump suit only lasts until the end of the match. Once someone wins and a new match begins, standard rules apply again until a Jack turns up.

Knockout Euchre

Standard Euchre rules apply in this game except for one little exception. If any players calls a Loner and manages to catch all 5 tricks, it’s Game Over! That player’s team immediately wins the match, even if it’s the first hand of the game.

Lefty’s Delight

The upcard will always be declared trump. Who takes it up is decided by the player left of the dealer (i.e. Lefty’s choice). He can choose anyone except himself to take it up – his partner or either opponent.

Little Junk

Normal Euchre rules remain in play for all hands unless a 9 is turned up. If the upcard is a 9, the player Left of Dealer must order it up.

Lonely Hearts Club / Sgt. Pepper’s Euchre

Righty will be praying for cubs to come in this wicked Euchre game! If a club turns up, the Dealer is forced to order it. If anything is turned up, the player Right of the dealer has no choice but to make trump in Hearts. If the upcard is a Heart, Righty can order it. If not, the first round passes and Righty must call Hearts instead.

Loner Buster

This unique variant can wreak havoc on a good Loner hand! By these rules, no player may lead a trump card to any trick unless they only have trumps remaining in their hand. All other standard rules apply, including STD.

Loners Win (Unless They Lose)

This is a unique variant in which anyone who has a loner wins the bid. Once a hand is dealt, but before standard bidding takes place, everyone will declare whether they have a loner hand or not by saying “Loner” or “No”.

If two or more players can go alone, the first among them to act wins the bid. It doesn’t matter if the loner intends to order the upcard as trump or call their own suit. The first loner hand always prevails in the bid. If no one has a loner hand, standard bidding resumes.

A player may only declare “Loner” if they’ve never lost a loner hand. If a player declares loner and fails to succeed in winning the hand, they can no longer declare loner for the rest of the game.

Loonie Suits

The opposite of Crazy Suits, this game’s rules state that each player will have one suit assigned to them that they cannot order or call trump for the entire match. If your suit appears as the upcard, you cannot order it, and if no one else orders it, you may not call your taboo suit as trump either.

Un-orderable trumps are assigned to the player in the corresponding seat on the first hand of the match as follows:

  • Dealer = Diamonds
  • Lefty = Hearts
  • Dealer’s Partner = Spades
  • Righty = Clubs

Note that the suits do not change with the deal. Whoever starts the first game as dealer cannot call diamonds for the entire match.

An alternative way to assign suits is to take one card of each suit, mix them up, then have every player draw one. The suit you draw is the suit you may not call.

Low Down & Dirty

All normal rules of play exist unless a 9 is turned up. If the upcard is a 9, the dealer must order it as trump. No exceptions!

Man on Top

The game starts with standard rules in play. After the first hand, the team that has the most points may only make trump in Black suits. The team that’s behind in the count can only make trump in Red suits. If the score becomes tied, choice of trump is open.

Musical Euchre

Don’t get too attached to your partners, because you’ll be switching up soon enough! By this unique rule, the player who wins the final trick of a hand must immediately switch seats with the player on their right, setting new partners for the next game.

Nasty Nines

The rules of the game only alter when a 9 is turned up. If a player orders up the 9 as trump and captures 3 tricks, the hand awards double points. If all 5 tricks are captured, it’s an automatic win of the entire game. If the defending team Euchres, it’s a double point win for them, plus a 2pt error for the makers. Think twice before ordering up those nasty nines!

Never Next

Next is a variant of Euchre that limits what suits can be called if the upcard is turned down. The basic rules state that, if all players pass on the upcard, no player can call “next”, wherein “next” refers to the suit of the same color as the upcard. Instead, players may only call the opposite color. For example, if the upcard is a Heart, players cannot call Diamonds (next card of the same color), they can only call Clubs or Spades. STD applies and loners are allowed.

Never Next, Stick Lefty

The player left of the dealer will always call trump, but is unable to order the upcard or suit of the same color. Instead, he/she must call a color opposite of the upcard. For example, if a heart is turned up, player left of dealer must call either clubs or spades trump.

No Ace, No Face, No Trump

Imagine being dealt a hand with no aces and no face cards – only 9s and 10s. You won’t be much help defending, especially if the player who makes trump calls a suit you also don’t have! If you end up in a hand wherein you have 5 cards, but no aces, no faces, and no trump cards, drop your hand face up and declare it, because you’ll automatically win the game in this weird but rewarding Euchre variant!

No First Blood

All the usual Euchre rules apply accept one. On the first trick of each hand, the maker cannot lead with a trump (aka draw first blood). Any player after the maker can capture the first trick with a trump, if applicable, and all subsequent tricks can be led with trump, but first blood cannot be taken on the first lead out.

Only the Lonely (aka Loners Only)

Anyone can order up or call trump as per standard rules, but whoever does must go it alone! The maker has no benefit of a partner.

Opposites Attract

By these rules, the Dealer is the only player who may make trump. The dealer must call the trump that is opposite of the upcard. For example, if a heart is turned up, the dealer must call diamonds; if it’s a club, the dealer must call spades.

P Don’t Pass / Partner Suicide

Like Suicide, but targeting the dealer’s partner instead of the dealer. All rules of ordering and calling are swept aside. The dealer’s partner is forced to order the upcard, no matter what. No one else may bid, and the partner cannot pass. Loners are optional. Play proceeds normally from there.

Pick & Stick

The object of this game is pick a single trump suit, and stick with it the entire game. Before starting, Team Captains are chosen. The game host is a Captain, and will take the first deal. The player left of the first dealer is the other team’s Captain. Each Captain will choose a suit for their team.

The upcard can only be ordered up if it’s in that team’s chosen suit. If all players pass, they may then choose to call trump in the second round, but again, only in their team’s chosen suit.

*It’s questionable whether the two teams should be allowed to call the same suit. Best to agree on this before the game begins.

Pick Your Poison

At the start of each new game, all players will choose a preferred suit. The dealer chooses first, then the dealer’s partner, then lefty, and finally righty. No player may choose the same suit. so righty is essentially stuck with whatever suit is left. For the entire game, each player is forced to order trump anytime their chosen suit is turned up. No exceptions; loners optional.

Predict The Future

Very similar to Pick & Stick, but without Team Captains. In this wacky Euchre version, each player can choose which single suit they wish to be able to order or call throughout the entire game. A player may not deviate from their choice. They may only order up if the upcard is of their chosen suit, but they do not have to. The same goes for calling – it’s optional, but only in the chosen suit.

Race Around the Block

This is a fast-paced and highly restrictive version of Euchre. It lasts only four hands, so that each player may take a turn as the dealer. Each hand, the dealer is required to make trump, either by ordering the upcard or passing, then calling a different suit. The team with the highest score after four hands wins. In case of tie, one more hand is played, also STD style.

Red Light Euchre

This is the opposite of Black Light Euchre and similar to Red Rosie. Only red suits can become trump. Only the dealer’s team can order or call diamonds. The dealer’s opponents can only order or call hearts. If a diamond is turned up, the dealer’s partner can order it or pass. If the partner passes, the dealer is forced to order it up. The same goes for turned up hearts – if the player left of dealer doesn’t order it, his partner must. If a black suit is turned up, no one may order it. A second round of bidding starts with players able to call their respective trump suit. If all others pass, STD applies.

Red Loners Only

Only red suits (hearts and diamonds) can be ordered or called. If ordering a red trump, loners are optional. If calling a red trump, the maker must go alone. STD applies.

Red vs Blue Suicide / Team Suicide Halvsies

This game requires each team to play by suicide rules for approximately half of the game. One team is labeled Red, and the other Blue. Or you can label them Team 1 and Team 2, or however you like. From the start of the game, Team 1 (Red) is forced to order the upcard in all hands. If the first team member passes, the second team members must order it up. Once either team has reached 5 points, the suicidal tendencies are reversed. Now Team 2 (Blue) is forced to order it up for the remainder of the game.

Red-Red / Black-Black (RR/BB)

In this game, one set of partners is RR, and can only order up red suits, hearts and diamonds. The other team is BB, and can only order up black suits, clubs and spades. STD applies, but only if the upcard matches the dealer’s requisite color. Otherwise, players can call their respective trump colors.

Red Rosie / Blood Sucker

The dealer (aka the vampire) is only allowed to order red suits (hearts and diamonds). All non-dealers, including the dealer’s partner, may only order black suits (clubs and spades).

Revenge / STP (Stick the Partner)

This is one of the more interesting and vicious variants of Euchre. If a player sticks the dealer, then they are automatically stuck on the next hand. Some groups call it Revenge, but I like to call it STP (Stick the Partner), because it is the dealer’s partner that is responsible for the STD, and therefore stuck on the following hand.

Reverse (aka Reverse Euchre)

This is the most popular of all crazy Euchre rule variations, and is applied as an amended rule to some of the other variations listed on this page. The concept is simple. All standard Euchre rules apply, except that the goal is to lose; which is to say that to lose is to win. Teams do their best not to catch any tricks. The first team to 10 points loses!

When playing any version of Reverse Euchre (Reverse Fudge Your Neighbor, Reverse Suicide, etc.), the Left Bower is not considered a natural trump. All players, except the dealer, must have at least one natural trump in their hand in order to order up the upcard. Only the dealer can order up without a natural trump in hand.

Reverse Black Rosie

The dealer is only allowed to order black suits (clubs and spades). All non-dealers, including the dealer’s partner, may only order red suits (hearts and diamonds). As per Reverse rules, the object of the game is to lose. Using traditional scoring, the first team to 10 points loses. Except for the dealer, no one may order the upcard as trump unless they have at least one more of the same suit in their hand. The dealer can order trump with or without a natural, so long as the upcard is black.

Reverse Checkers

Same as standard Checkers rules – each hand, the dealing team can only order or call black; non-dealing team can only order or call red – except with Reverse rules. The object is not to catch tricks. First team to score 10 points loses.

Reverse Crazy Suits

At the start of every game, each player is assigned one suit. The suit that appears on the upcard determines who must order it up. If it’s your suit, it’s your card! Ordering is forced., with each player position at the start of a match being assigned the following suits.

  • Dealer is Diamonds
  • Lefty is Hearts
  • Dealer’s Partner is Spades
  • Righty is Clubs

Note that the suits do not change with the deal. Whoever starts the first game as dealer is diamonds for the entire match, and so on.

Because this is a Reverse game, the idea is to lose by catching little or no points. The first team to 10 points loses. Loners are not allowed.

Reverse Dirty Courage

If the upcard is 9 or 10, the dealer must take it up. No one else may order it, and the dealer cannot pass. If any other card turns up, anyone may order or call it, in accordance with Reverse Euchre rules.

Reverse Duck Duck Goose

Like standard Duck Duck Goose, the dealer is forced to order it up in the first hand of play, and the catcher of the last trick orders it up on the next from there on out. This time, Reverse rules are applied, meaning the goal is to lose. The first player to 10 points loses. Loners are not allowed!

Reverse Fudge Your Neighbor

This is another Reverse version of Fudge Your Neighbor, wherein the object is to lose the game. If no one orders up, the dealer must pass to the next player, who is forced to call trump. The dealer will tell the player to his left what trump suit to call, and that player has no choice but to comply.

Reverse Homicidal Colors

If standard Homicidal Colors isn’t hard enough to make you cringe, try the Reverse edition on for size! Before dealing the first hand, the Host (or Dealer) must pick a color, red or black. If this color is turned up in the first hand of play, it must be ordered. If it does not turn up, everyone must pass round one and the chosen color must be called instead. STD applies! Then during the first hand, and all hands thereafter, the first player to catch a trick will immediately call the homicidal color (red or black) for the next game. Playing in Reverse, however, players do not want to win tricks or generate points. The first team to 10 points loses. See all Reverse rules for additional implications.

Reverse Loonie Suits

In this Reverse rules edition of Euchre, each player is assigned one suit that they may not call for the entire match, based on their starting position in the first hand. Un-orderable suits do not rotate with the deal. The player who stars in the following position may not order or call the corresponding suit:

  • Dealer = Diamonds
  • Lefty = Hearts
  • Dealer’s Partner = Spades
  • Righty = Clubs

Reverse Only the Lonely (aka Reverse Loners Only)

Like traditional Only the Lonely rules, anyone can order up or call trump, just like in a standard game. However, the maker must go alone, without the benefit of a partner. Normally, this would present a hindrance for accumulating points, but since this particular edition is played with Reverse rules, it’s actually one of the easier reversal games to win (or lose, depending on how you look at it).

Reverse Red Rosie

The dealer is only allowed to order red suits (hearts and diamonds). All non-dealers, including the dealer’s partner, may only order black suits (clubs and spades). As per Reverse rules, the object of the game is to lose. Using traditional scoring, the first team to 10 points loses. Aside from the dealer, no one may order the upcard as trump unless they have at least one more natural trump in their hand. The dealer can order trump with or without a natural in hand, so long as the upcard is red.

Reverse Sexes Euchre

As the name implies, this variation works best playing with mixed genders, either male + female partnerships, or guys versus girls. The ladies can only order up or call red trumps suits (hearts and diamonds). The men must only order/call black trumps suits (clubs and spades). Being a game of Reverse rules, the first team to 10 points loses.

Reverse Sudden Death

The queen of Spades has long been considered the bringer of the kiss of death. That sentiment holds true in this variant. For the most part, all standard Reverse Euchre rules apply, unless the Queen of Spades happens to be turned up by the dealer. If this occurs, the game ends immediately! The current hand is not even finished (unless it’s required to break a tie). The team with the highest score at that moment loses (per Reverse rules).

Reverse Suicide

Like the standard Suicide variant, the dealer is forced to order up trump, no matter what the upcard is. However, this time, the game is played by Reverse rules, wherein each team is trying lose in order to win. So the dealer orders trump every hand, and first team to earn 10 points loses.

Reverse Switch Call

The first hand starts like a standard game of Reverse Euchre. The color of the trump suit that is ordered or called in that round will determine the flow of the rest of the game. If black trump is ordered/called in the first hand, a red trump must be ordered/called in the next hand. If the turned up card does not fall in line with the required trump color, a player must call the correct suit color instead. STD applies.

Risky Business

Whomsoever holds the Right Bower to the upcard (Jack of the same suit) must order it up. If the Right Bower is buried beneath the upcard (no one has it), the first player (starting with dealer’s left) holding any Jack must order it up. If a Jack is turned up, then it is already the Right Bower, and it must be taken up by the dealer.

Russian Roulette

This is a game of dastardly intent wherein the Dealer decides who will order up the trump. The dealer can either take the upcard himself, or choose one of the two opposing teammates to order it. Only the dealer’s partner cannot be named maker.

Sabotage

This is a tricky one, but really fun once you get it down! It requires each team to have a Captain. Each Captain sits across from one another, with their teammates across from one another as well (as if they were partners – but they’re not). The Captains are trying to win the game by collecting points, and their partners are trying to help by feeding them tricks. The saboteur (defending partner) will try to throw tricks for his Captain to catch. Essentially, the Captains are playing standard Euchre, while their partners are playing Reverse, trying not to catch tricks. Going alone is not allowed! STD is optional.

Sexes Euchre

If you’re playing with mixed genders – either male + female partnerships, or guys versus gals – try this unique Euchre rule on for size. In this version, the ladies can only order up or call trumps in red suits. The gentlemen are restricted to ordering/calling trumps in black suits.

Sloppy Suicide

The non-dealing team is required to make trump by ordering the upcard. If the player left of dealer orders it up, loners are optional. However, if Lefty doesn’t order it up, choosing to pass to his/her partner, that player is forced to order it up, and must go alone.

Spades for Lefty

If a spade is turned up, the player left of the dealer (aka Lefty) must order it as trump. Otherwise, all standard rules, including STD, apply.

Spades or Die / Absolute Spades

Spades are the only suit that can be made trump for the entire match. No other suits are eligible. If a spade is turned up, the dealer must take it up. If any other suit turns up, the player left of the dealer must call spades trump. Loners are optional.

Spank The Right

The player right of the dealer (aka Righty) is forced to order or call trump. If this player passes on ordering up the upcard, he/she must call a different trump.

Speed Euchre

If the normal 10-to-win rules are Euchre take too long, try this quicker version instead. Play only 4 hands, so each person gets to be the dealer one time. To keep it fair, the dealer should be chosen by random draw. The team with the highest score after 4 hands wins, and if it’s a tie, play one more hand to settle it. STD applies.

Note: If that’s still not quick enough for you, check out Fast & Furious Euchre.

Stage Assassins

This is a treacherous but exciting version of Euchre wherein the 9 of Clubs names the Assassin in each hand. Whichever player dealt the 9 of Clubs is the Assassin for that hand. If no player is dealt 9 of Clubs, the Dealer is the Assassin. If the 9 of Clubs is turned up, the Dealer is Assassinated, and must order it up. The Assassins job is to choose who will order it up in that hand. The Assassin may choose any player, including him/herself. Whoever is assassinated cannot refuse, and must order trump.

Steal the Deal

In the first round, anyone except the dealer may order up trump. The dealer is not allowed to order it up. However, if the first three players all pass, the dealer is the only one who can call trump. It’s not optional – STD applies! Dealer must call trump if everyone else passes.

Strip 9’s

One of my personal favorites – don’t worry, you won’t be taking any clothes off! – this rule disallows the trumping of led 9s. If anyone leads a 9, no one may play a trump on it unless only trumps remain in their hand.

Sudden Death

This is just a standard game of Euchre, following standard Euchre rules, unless the Queen of Spades happens to be turned up by the dealer. If this happens, the game is immediately over. The player with the highest score wins. In case of a tie when the Queen of Spades turns up, play out the final hand to determine the winner.

Suicide

All rules of ordering and calling are swept aside. The dealer is forced to order up the upcard, no matter what it is. Loners are optional. Play proceeds as usual from there.

Switch Call

For the first hand of play, normal rules apply. Afterwards, the opposite color must be ordered or called. If the upcard is the same color as trump in the last hand, it cannot be ordered. Someone must call the opposite color. If the first hand trump is black, the next must be red, then black again and so forth.

Tag Team Black Rosie

Only the dealer and dealer’s partner are able to order up or call trump. The dealer is limited to ordering/calling black trumps only, while the dealer’s partner may only order/call red trumps.

Tag Team Cyanide Suicide

The dealer is the only player capable of ordering the upcard as trump. If the dealer orders it up, he/she is forced to go alone. If the dealer passes, his/her partner is forced to call trump, and must go it alone.

Tag Team Red Rosie

Only the dealer and dealer’s partner are able to order up or call trump. The dealer is limited to ordering/calling red trumps only, while the dealer’s partner may only order/call black trumps.

Tag Team Suicide

The dealer is the only player capable of ordering the upcard as trump. If the dealer passes, his/her partner is forced to call trump.

Three Suits

On the first hand of play, any suit may be ordered or called. At the moment that the maker orders or calls suit that hand, that player must also immediately identify any single suit to become void in the following hand. When the second hand is dealt, the identified suit may not be ordered or called. Whoever does order or call a suit in that hand must again identify a suit to void in the next hand. Play continues in this fashion until the game is won.

So aside from the first hand of play, there will only be three suits (hence the name) available for order/call per hand. If the suit identified as void is turned up in the next hand, no one may order it. Everyone will automatically pass round one, then call trump in round to, sticking the dealer (STD) if none call.

Trumps R Us

Each player position is assigned a suit, like so:

  • Dealer = Clubs
  • Dealer’s Left = Hearts
  • Dealer’s Partner = Spades
  • Dealer’s Right = Diamonds

The upcard will determine who is forced to order it up. For example, if the upcard is a diamond, the player right of the dealer must order it up.

Twist Of Fate

Before the first hand, a Twist card is chosen, either out loud by the first dealer, or by drawing one random card before shuffling. The Twist card will be 9, 10, J, Q, K or A (suit is irrelevant). The game begins with all the usual Euchre rules and continues as such until the Twist card appears turned up. If this happens, the rules convert to Reverse Euchre. Every hand, including the current one, will now be played in Reverse until the Twist card turns up again (revert back to standard rules), or until a team reaches 10 points and wins the game, whichever comes first. STD applies, and Loners are only allowed while standard rules are in effect.

Up Is Down

The upcard is automatically turned down. It cannot be ordered up by anyone. After all pass round one, anyone can call trump in round two. STD applies.

Wacky Loners

This game puts a target on everyone’s back, and there’s no escape! Every round of play, someone will order up trump. The player who orders it will be determined by the suit turned up:

  • Dealer can only call Hearts, and must order any Heart turned up
  • Left of Dealer can only call Diamonds, and must order any Diamond turned up
  • Dealer’s Partner can only call Clubs, and must order any Club turned up
  • Right of Dealer can only call Spades, and must order any Spade turned up

Oh, and one more thing, whoever orders up trump must go alone! Enjoy 🙂

Crazy Ways to Play Euchre w/ British Rules

This next section is dedicated to wacky ways to play Euchre by British rules. If you’re used to the Canadian version, please refer to our British Euchre Rules before partaking in any of these variants.

British Black Rosie

With each hand played, the current dealer may only order or call black suits (clubs and spades). Any non-dealing player is limited to ordering or calling red suits (hearts and diamonds) as trump. Loners are optional; British rules and STD apply.

British Crazy Suits

Before the game starts, every player is assigned a suit that they are restricted to making trump in. If that suit is turned up, the player that suit is assigned to must order it – no exceptions! Suit assignments are based on each player’s position in the first hand of the match. The suit you’re assigned does not rotate with the deal. Assignments are as follows:

  • Dealer is Diamonds
  • Lefty is Hearts
  • Dealer’s Partner is Spades
  • Righty is Clubs

If the Joker is turned up, Benny Up rule applies – dealer must order it, calling trump before looking at his cards. Loners are optional; British rules apply.

British Cyanide Suicide

In this suicidal Euchre variant, the dealer is again forced to order the upcard as trump every all hand, without exception. This time, however, circumstances are made even more difficult as the dealer must also go alone! Loners enforced; British rules apply.

British Dirty Courage

Dealer’s get the short end of the stick in this game, where the dealer is forced to order any 9 or 10 that appears as the upcard. No one else can claim it, and the dealer cannot pass. If any other card is turned up, standard British rules apply.

British Dirty Spades

Things get dirty for the dealer in this British rules Euchre variant wherein the dealer is forced to order any spade that gets turned up. No one else can order it, and the dealer can’t pass. If any other suit is turned up, traditional British rules apply. Loners are optional, STD applies.

British Duck Duck Goose

In this British-rules game of round-table, player’s are forced to make trump based on their seating position or actions in the previous hand. For the first hand, the dealer must order the upcard. If it’s the joker, he can call trump, but must do so before looking at his hand. Otherwise, the upcard’s suit is trump. The same rules apply in all subsequent hands, except that the player who captures the final trick in the previous hand must order up trump in the next.

British Goose Goose Duck

This slightly more versatile edition of British Duck Duck Goose allows the player who is forced to make trump to choose whether they want to order the upcard or call their own suit (as opposed to forced ordering). In the first hand of play, the dealer must order or call trump. For all subsequent hands, the player who captures the final trick in the previous hand must order/call trump in the following hand. Loners are allowed; British rules apply.

British Homicidal Colors

This variant eliminates the advantage of choosing your preferred suit as trump. Before the first hand is dealt, the dealer must name a color, red or black. That color must be made trump in the first hand. The upcard can only be ordered if it matches the named color. Once the hand begins, the player who catches the first trick must immediately call a color to be made trump in the next next. A new color is called in this fashion each hand until the match is over. Loners allowed; British rules and STD apply.

British Kamikaze

This is an extreme version of Euchre in which British, STD and Reverse rules apply. The dealer’s partner cannot order the upcard, and if the other team doesn’t order it, the dealer is forced to do so. With Joker as high trump, winning this game isn’t so easy, since it’s the first to 10 points that loses. Loners are not allowed.

British Loonie Suits

This game is essentially the opposite of British Crazy Suits. Before the game begins, every player is assigned one card suit that they cannot order or call as trump for the entire match. If your suit is turned up, you cannot order it. If everyone passes, you cannot call it.

Un-orderable trumps are assigned to players based on their position in the first hand played. Assigned suits do not rotate with the deal. If you can’t order spades in the first hand, you won’t be able to order them for the entire game. Positions and un-orderable suit assignments are as follows:

  • Dealer = No Diamonds
  • Lefty = No Hearts
  • Dealer’s Partner = No Spades
  • Righty = No Clubs

Loners are optional; British rules and STD apply.

British Only the Lonely / British Loners Only

Any player may order trump, or of all players pass on the upcard, any player may call trump. However, the maker is forced to go alone, forfeiting the perks of partnership. Loners are forced; British rules and STD apply.

British Red Rosie

With each hand played, the current dealer may only order or call red suits (hearts and diamonds). Any non-dealing player is limited to ordering or calling black suits (clubs and spades) as trump. Loners are optional; British rules and STD apply.

British Reverse Duck Duck Goose

The Reverse rule edition of Duck Duck Goose by British rules, this game requires the dealer to order the upcard in the first hand of play, no exceptions. The player to catch the last trick in each subsequent hand will force-order the upcard in the next. Being a reversal game, the object is not to catch tricks or earn points. The first team to 10 points loses. No Loners; British rules apply.

British Reverse Suicide

The “losers win” version of Suicide with British rules, this tricky edition omits all standard rules of ordering and calling. The dealer is forced to order the upcard in every hand, no exceptions, and cannot go alone. By Reverse rules, the first to 10 points loses.

British Sexes Euchre

This is a fun alternate if you’re playing with a group of equally mixed genders – a pair of male + female partnerships or guys versus the ladies. The game is played by British rules, with the single exception that the men may only make trump in black suits (clubs and spades), while girls can only make trump in red suits (diamonds and hearts). Loners are allowed; British rules and STD apply.

British Sudden Death

Most of the time, this is just your ordinary run of the mill British Euchre game. All traditional rules apply. The only time the game changes is if the Queen of Spades is turned up. Should this happen, the game ends immediately! The team with the highest score wins. The final hand will not be played out unless the score is tied, thus deciding a winner. Loners optional; British rules and STD apply.

British Suicide

Forget about ordering and calling trump. Unless you’re the dealer, you can’t. And if you are the dealer, you have no choice! The dealer must order the upcard every single hand, no exceptions. Loners are optional; British rules apply.

British Switch Call Euchre

The first hand is played by normal British rules. Pay close attention to what color is made trump, because in the next hand, the trump must be the opposite color. The switch rules continues throughout the match, never repeating the same color in consecutive hands. For example, if clubs are ordered up in the first hand, only hearts or diamonds can be made trump in the second, then reverting back to clubs or spades in hand #3, and so forth. Loners are optional; British rules and STD apply.
