Online Poker Ontario – The Regulation of Digital Gambling
Ontario’s primary goal in regulating internet gambling may not have been to give poker players access to the safest online card rooms, but it was a positive side effect. The whole reason provincial leaders agreed to branch out into a competitive commercial market was to capitalize on the nation’s recent legalization of single-event sports betting. Sure, Ontario could have just launched sports betting venues throughout local casinos. But they understood that making them available online would surely appeal more to today’s technology-driven society. And to give people a choice in what sportsbooks they wanted to bet with; that was the real goal, as industry research had long proven that competition was the key to ultimate success.
So, a few years ago, Ontario began sculpting the framework for expansion. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) did much of the work, creating a new agency, iGaming Ontario, to be the official regulator of the new market. Soon enough, online operators from all over the world began submitting applications for AGCO and iGO approval. Only the best of the best would receive the green light. And on April 4, 2022, it began. The first 18 licensed operators went live in Ontario.
At the start, there were just two online poker rooms on the list. They were 888 Poker and BetMGM Poker. In the proceeding months, however, that number began to rise. Today, of the more than 65 iGaming websites boasting iGO regulation, 13 of them are online poker operators.
