Casino Roulette 101: The Value of Outside Bets in Roulette

Casino Roulette 101: Examining the Value of Outside Bets in RouletteToday, we continue once more with our growing guide to playing live and online roulette games. We’ve already covered the rules and variations of roulette. Our current write-ups cover the three major types of wagers one can place. They include Inside bets, Outside bets, and (in a land-based casino) Announced bets.

The following information deals solely with Outside Bets. There are 12 ways to place an outside bet. These wagers pay smaller dividends for a win, but have higher odds of actually winning. This article will teach you all about the eight types of outside bets, how to place them, and what to expect in return.

Before we start, if you aren’t already familiar with our previous tutorials, you may want to take a moment to read those first:

Outside Bets in Roulette

The term Onside Bets refers to the outer-most area on the roulette table’s betting diagram. The graphic below shows what you can expect to find on a standard roulette table. The outside betting area is the portion located below and to the right of the 0-36 numbered area.

Outside Bets in Roulette

All outside bets are made on large groups of numbers; specific sets of 12 or 18. Below is a run-down of all possible outside bets. Please refer back to the above graphic to find their placement on the table.

Dozens & Rows

There are six ways to place bets on groups of 12 numbers at a time. Three of them are known as Dozens, and the other three as Rows.

Dozens

1st 12: A bet on the first dozen numbers, 1 thru 12. Place this bet by putting a chip on the section labeled “1st 12”.
2nd 12: A bet on the second dozen numbers, 13 thru 24. Place this bet by putting a chip on the section labeled “2nd 12”.
3rd 12: A bet on the third dozen numbers, 25 thru 36. Place this bet by putting a chip on the section labeled “3rd 12”.

Rows

Top Row: A bet on the top row of numbers on the roulette table. They include 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36. Place this bet by putting a chip on the far right of this row, in the adjacent box labeled “2 to 1”.
Middle Row: A bet on the middle row of numbers on the roulette table. They include 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32 and 35. Place this bet by putting a chip on the far right of this row, in the adjacent box labeled “2 to 1”.
Bottom Row: A bet on the bottom row of numbers on the roulette table. They include 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 34. Place this bet by putting a chip on the far right of this row, in the adjacent box labeled “2 to 1”.

Even Money Wagers

The remaining six outside bets are all even money wagers, meaning you win (or lose) as much you bet on them. These wagers have the highest odds of winning; almost being a 50/50 chance, if it weren’t for that dastardly 0.

Low 1-18: A bet that the winning number will be between 1 and 18. Place this bet by putting a chip in the section labeled “1 to 18”.

High 19-36: A bet that the winning number will be between 19 and 36. Place this bet by putting a chip in the section labeled “19 to 36”.

Odd: A bet that the winning number will be odd (as opposed to even). Place this bet by putting a chip in the section labeled “ODD”.
Even: A bet that the winning number will be even (as opposed to odd). Note that 0 is not an even number. Place this bet by putting a chip in the section labeled “EVEN”.

Black: A bet that the winning number will be on a black position on the table and wheel. Place this bet by putting a chip in the section marked with a black diamond.

Red: A bet that the winning number will be on a red position on the table and wheel. Place this bet by putting a chip in the section marked with a red diamond.
